GENERATIVE WEB WORK · VERSIONS

Conscious Flower

The work grows in versions. Each one is kept as it was first shown, newest first.

  1. Version 4 · October 2026Current

    The flower and its visitors

Version 3’s flower, now answering how you move: gentle movement lights it like a lantern, freer movement multiplies it into the mandala. The honeyeaters and lorikeets recorded nearby are drawn as their own species — flying in, hovering or clinging to feed at the flower, and perched at the ends of their threads when stillness reveals them.

  2. Version 3 · October 2026

    Movement multiplies, stillness reveals

Version 2’s living grevillea, now answering movement. Passing over the flower folds its own colours into a turning kaleidoscopic mandala — circling turns it, each side holds a different symmetry — then it settles back into one flower, and stillness reveals its relationships.

  3. Version 2 · October 2026

A single being, and its relationships

A photographed grevillea living in Sydney’s real time. Stillness reveals its relationships — sun, rain, soil, honeyeaters recorded nearby, other visitors and you. Visitors carry pollen, and their meetings grow a shared field.

  4. Version 1 · September 2026

    A field of grevilleas

The first iteration: a generative field of grevilleas, native birds, stars and drifting light, reorganising around the visitor. A test of the web dynamics a more complex work would need.

Prototypes

Third Prototype · Bees and birds

The mandala study, with sound. Bees hum around the flower, each on its own path; when touch folds it into a mandala they gather close and their humming settles into a chord set by its symmetry, so many voices become one pattern. Birds call near and far — spinebill piping, honeyeater whistles, a wattlebird’s chock — over a breath of moving air. The sound follows the flower’s never-repeating rhythms and answers the hand: quick movement stirs the bees, stillness calms them and draws the birds nearer, and when you let go a bird answers. Sound begins with your first touch.

    Prototype 2 · The mandala

The portrait study, now answering touch. Hold or drag across the flower and its photograph folds into a kaleidoscopic mandala made of its own light; circle it and the pattern turns, each side holding a different symmetry. Let go and it becomes one flower again.

    Its own form, changing

A portrait study. The photographed grevillea’s own form swirls, opens, folds into its symmetries and sways, while long styles drawn in its colours reach out from behind the head. Its rhythms never fall back into step, so the flower never takes the same form twice. Touch draws it toward you.
